Understand capture, upload and draft processing
What happens to a recording from the first word to the draft note, and what each status on screen means.
Purpose
A recording passes through a few stages before it becomes a draft note. Knowing them tells you what each status means and when it's safe to move on.
Steps
Step 1: While you record
You'll seeRECORDING, and captions as people talk.
Sotwo things happen at once. The captions travel to Keel live, and a backup copy of the audio is kept on this
device.
Step 2: If captions stop
You'll seeCAPTIONS STOPPED and Still recording. Nothing is being lost.
Sothe live connection dropped, but the device is still recording. Carry on with the visit.
at the start you may briefly see CONNECTING CAPTIONS. The recording has already started.
Step 3: When you end
Doselect End consult.
You'll seeSecuring the recording… while the device finishes saving.
if it shows The recording is safe on this device. and The save didn't go through., select
Try again. Don't close the page.
Step 4: While the note is written
You'll seeConsult ended · processing, then Saving the recording…, Finalising the transcript…,
Writing the note… and Checking what needs your review….
SoKeel writes the note from what was said, then flags anything that needs your review.
this usually takes under a minute. The note will be waiting on the consultation when it's ready.
Step 5: When the draft is ready
You'll seethe draft note on the same screen, with Synthesised at the top.
Sothe recording is saved to Keel and the backup copy on this device is cleared.
Result
You'll seea draft note waiting for your review on the consultation.
If it doesn't work
- If you see: Recovering from backup…, then Recovered from backupThe live captions were incomplete, so the note is rebuilt from the full recording on this device. Check it as usual.
- If you see: The save didn't go through.The recording is still on this device. Select Try again (step 3).
- If you see: The note hasn't come backWhat to do when a draft does not appear
- Working: SynthesisedDone. Review the draft.
Limits
if you leave while recording, your browser warns that the recording captured so far will be
lost. While the note is being written, it warns that anything you typed will be lost.
in a private or incognito window, the backup copy is kept only in memory, so it can't be recovered
if the tab closes.
coming back to a consultation whose note is being written opens the processing screen. It never
starts a new recording.
Checked against the Keel product source and in the live product on 2026-10-11. No step on this page was observed. Recording, captions, saving, the processing screen and the draft were not exercised.
