Resolve an unavailable action
Find out why a button is missing, greyed out or locked for you, and who can unlock it.
Purpose
In Keel, what you can do depends on your role. Each teammate has one role:
- Owner — full control: clinic, team, billing, everything.
- Doctor — own profile, sign-off, consultations.
- Front Desk — appointments, patients, payments.
- Finance — billing, invoices, reports.
If something is missing, greyed out or locked, work down this list. Stop at the first row that matches.
Checklist
- If you see: You don't have access to a clinic. after signing inYou were removed, or haven't been added yet. Ask your clinic Owner. See Understand why clinic access was removed.
- If you see: In Settings, the area is under Also in this clinic with a lock label such as Owner only or Owner or FinanceYour role can't open it. Ask your clinic Owner to change your role (Change roles and centre access).
- If you see: You don't have permission to do that. or You don't have permission to invite members.Your role can't do this. Ask your clinic Owner, or ask them to change your role (Change roles and centre access).
- If you see: Team has no Invite a member button and no ⋯ next to peopleOnly the Owner manages the team (Invite a teammate)
- If you see: The rate card says VIEW ONLYOnly the Owner adds or changes services (Make a service bookable)
- If you see: The sign key is greyed: Signing a note needs prescribing rights on your profile. Ask your clinic owner to turn them on.The Owner grants prescribing on Team (Understand clinical signing authority)
- If you see: The sign key is greyed: This is [doctor]'s note. Ask them to sign it, or your clinic owner can.Only that doctor, an Owner with prescribing, or a doctor covering for them can sign it (who can sign)
- If you see: The sign key is greyed: This note has no consulting doctor on record. Only a clinic owner with prescribing rights can sign it.Ask an Owner with prescribing to sign it (who can sign)
- If you see: Seat limit reached, or a message that your trial has endedThat's your plan, not your role (Why a feature is unavailable)
- If you see: None of the aboveAsk your clinic Owner what your role allows

Checked against the Keel product source and in the live product on 2026-10-09. The How roles work summary, the locked areas in Settings with their lock labels, View only on the rate card, and Team without an Invite a member button for a non-Owner were observed. The permission messages, the greyed sign key, the removed-access screen and the seat-limit and trial messages were not exercised.
